The Perfect Word

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:1-5

Michael Card is a favorite songwriter of mine because he always uses words precisely. He opens up my understanding of biblical concepts. He makes me think deeply. When I first heard of our theme this season – The Word of God – I immediately thought of his song The Final Word:

You and me, we use so very many clumsy words.
The noise of what we often say is not worth being heard.
When the Father’s wisdom wanted to communicate His love
He spoke it in one final perfect word.

He spoke the incarnation and then so was born the Son.
His final word was Jesus, He needed no other one.
Spoke flesh and blood, so He could bleed and make a way divine,
And so was born the baby who would die to make it mine.

And so, the Father’s fondest thought took on flesh and bone.
He spoke the living luminous word, at once His will was done
And so the transformation that in man had been unheard
Took place in God the Father as He spoke that final word.

And so, the light became alive
And manna became man
Eternity stepped into time
So we could understand.

As a writer and editor, I love finding the perfect words to convey my thoughts. As our culture has changed, so have our words. They are no longer precise, but mean whatever we want them to mean. “Sick” used to mean illness, but now it can mean cool. “Cool” used to mean the opposite of warm, but now it can mean the same as wicked. “Wicked” used to mean evil, but now it can mean excellent. “The noise of what we often say is not worth being heard.”

But God, just as He spoke the light into being (Genesis 1:3), spoke the Light to take on flesh to reveal His glory. “Again, Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life,’” John 8:12.

Thoughts higher than our thoughts. Hard for us to comprehend on our own. “Eternity stepped into time so we could understand.” Jesus reveals the Father to us, “and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth,” John 1:14.

What a gift we have in the Bible, where we can learn to know God. His Words never change, because His words are true. Choose now to not walk in darkness but to have the light of life. Set your heart to become a woman of the Word. Take your Bible off the shelf and hide it in your heart.

“Let us know; let us press on to know the Lord;
    his going out is sure as the dawn;
he will come to us as the showers,
    as the spring rains that water the earth.”

Hosea 6:3
