‘Wife for Life’ Scripture-Prayers

*Scriptures are New Living Translation

This list has been put together by Di Mathis (a former pastor’s wife – her husband Scott is the President of the Fellowship of Berean Churches) and Denna Busenitz (who networked with other pastors’ wives and wrote these prayers in a format similar to her training with Moms in Prayer International).

I recently heard Di Mathis share the ‘wife for life’ verses she faithfully prays for her husband and was inspired to write some corresponding prayers. Praying for my pastor-husband is one of the most powerful and hard-fought uses of my time. I’ve arranged twelve different Scripture prayers into seven days so you can pray them throughout a week OR feel free to use them however you’d like in your own prayer time. Some of these are focused on praying for your pastor-husband but most can be prayed for your husband regardless of what God has called him to do. Be encouraged as you lift up your husband through the ministry of prayer!

*If you have additional Scriptures you pray for your husband, please email them to [email protected] as Denna would like to do a sequel prayer-list at some point in the future.

MONDAY

Genesis 2:18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.

Lord God, make me a helper just right for my husband ___________, reminding us both that it’s not good to be alone. May we together remember that You called the creation of man and woman “very good.”

Proverbs 31:10-12 Who can find a virtuous and capable wife? She is more precious than rubies. Her husband can trust her, and she will greatly enrich his life. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.”

Lord God, help me to greatly enrich my husband __________’s life, allowing me to bring him good and not harm all the days of my life. Make me a virtuous and capable wife who knows her worth is found in Christ. Next to You, let my husband consider me his most precious treasure.

TUESDAY

1 Corinthians 7:1-5 Now regarding the questions you asked in your letter. Yes, it is good to abstain from sexual relations. But because there is so much sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman should have her own husband. The husband should fulfill his wife’s sexual needs, and the wife should fulfill her husband’s needs. The wife gives authority over her body to her husband, and the husband gives authority over his body to his wife. Do not deprive each other of sexual relations, unless you both agree to refrain from sexual intimacy for a limited time so you can give yourselves more completely to prayer. Afterward, you should come together again so that Satan won’t be able to tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

Lord God, I ask You to bless my husband __________’s and my sex-life, keeping us from any and all sexual immorality. May we together realize, fulfill, and enjoy each other’s sexual desires and needs. If we do agree to refrain for a time, let it be so we can devote ourselves more completely to prayer. In Jesus’ powerful name, I ask that Satan would not tempt my husband or myself because of lack of self-control and that we would always come back together.

WEDNESDAY

Ephesians 5:33 So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Colossians 3:18 Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting for those who belong to the Lord.

Lord God, enable my husband __________ to love me as he loves himself; help me to see and appreciate the ways he seeks to do this. Lord God, enable me to respect my husband __________; help him to see and appreciate when I do. Let us together rejoice in how fitting these actions are for those who belong to You!

1 Peter 3:1-6 In the same way, you wives must accept the authority of your husbands. Then, even if some refuse to obey the Good News, your godly lives will speak to them without any words. They will be won over by observing your pure and reverent lives. Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes. You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God. This is how the holy women of old made themselves beautiful. They put their trust in God and accepted the authority of their husbands. For instance, Sarah obeyed her husband, Abraham, and called him her master. You are her daughters when you do what is right without fear of what your husbands might do.

Lord God, help me to live and model a godly life of purity and holy reverence as I also accept the authority of my husband ______ in my life. Let me be free of outward bondage to beauty and instead clothe myself with an inner beauty that comes from spending time with You. I trust You God; help me to trust Your workings in my husband _______ too. May I be as Sarah to Abraham, not letting fear be my master.

THURSDAY

Colossians 1:9-14 So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better. We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy, always thanking the Father. He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to his people, who live in the light. For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.

Lord God, I pray that You would give my husband ____________ complete knowledge of Your will along with all spiritual wisdom and understanding into every aspect of life and ministry today. Whether he’s studying, shepherding, working, discipling, evangelizing, counseling, visiting, resting/rejuvenating or spending time with family – I pray that he will live in a way that honors and pleases You. May his life produce every kind of good fruit as he grows closer to You.

Lord God, I pray that You would strengthen my husband ____________ with all Your glorious power so that he will have the endurance and patience he needs. May You fill him with joy and thanksgiving. Thank You for rescuing him from darkness and allowing him to serve you; remind him that You purchased his freedom. Help him to walk in Your forgiveness from sins.

FRIDAY

Romans 12:11 Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically.

Lord God, may my husband _________ never be lazy but work hard and serve You with enthusiasm.

Psalm 115:14 May the Lord richly bless both you and your children.

Lord God, may You richly bless my husband _________, our marriage, and the lives of our children.

SATURDAY

Titus 2:1-8 As for you, Titus, promote the kind of living that reflects wholesome teaching. Teach the older men to exercise self-control, to be worthy of respect, and to live wisely. They must have sound faith and be filled with love and patience. Similarly, teach the older women to live in a way that honors God. They must not slander others or be heavy drinkers. Instead, they should teach others what is good. These older women must train the younger women to love their husbands and their children, to live wisely and be pure, to work in their homes, to do good, and to be submissive to their husbands. Then they will not bring shame on the word of God. In the same way, encourage the young men to live wisely. And you yourself must be an example to them by doing good works of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching. Teach the truth so that your teaching can’t be criticized. Then those who oppose us will be ashamed and have nothing bad to say about us.

Lord God, may my husband _______ promote the kind of living that reflects wholesome teaching. May he teach older men to exercise self-control, be worthy of respect, and live wisely even as You teach him how. May my husband _______ have sound faith and be filled with love and patience. May I, _______, teach the older women to live in a way that honors God even as You teach me how. May I, _______, not slander others or be a heavy drinker, instead teaching others what is good. May I, _______, train younger women to love their husbands and children, showing them how to live wisely. Together and with Your help, may my husband and I be examples to others as we teach the truth knowing that when we face opposition, we don’t need to be ashamed and fear that others will say bad things about us. May we stand firm in the truth of God’s Word together.

SUNDAY

Colossians 1:25-28 God has given me the responsibility of serving his church by proclaiming his entire message to you. This message was kept secret for centuries and generations past, but now it has been revealed to God’s people. For God wanted them to know that the riches and glory of Christ are for you Gentiles, too. And this is the secret: Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing his glory. So we tell others about Christ, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all the wisdom God has given us. We want to present them to God, perfect in their relationship to Christ.

Lord God, I praise You that my husband ________, like Paul, has been given the responsibility of serving Your church by proclaiming the Gospel message in its entirety remembering that You live in him! I pray that my husband ________ would proclaim Christ clearly, warn boldly, and teach faithfully to those whom he ministers to so they may become mature in Christ.

2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.

Lord God, I pray that You will infuse my husband ________ with courage, calmness, clarity, and passion while he speaks from the pulpit and with the people he shepherds. May he not have a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.

We also have a list of Prayers for Pastors’ Kids here.
